Ride around the Thau pond
35 minutes by car from the lodgings “In the shade of an olive tree”, L’Etang de Thau is a must visit in the Hérault. The light is magnificent, even in winter! Notice to photographers!
Thau pond
First is a place of shellfish farming, with a production of famous oysters and mussels. All around you will find restaurants or producers who taste their products around a glass of local white wine. The Thau lake is a tourist site, and you have to go around it, by car, by bike (development of cycle paths). Pretty villages crisscross this visit: Bouzigues, Poussan, Mèze, Marseillan … From Balaruc les Bains. the cycle path is pleasant, the view of the Thau lagoon is often magnificent.
So you have to stop in Bouzigues
Nice little typical village with its fishermen and its oyster and mussel parks. You will also find the Thau Pond Museum there. Mèze will also delight you with its pretty harbor and restaurants, its market. It is one of the oldest cities in the basin and is home to the Thau pond ecosite. Marseillan is an ancient Marseille city. The tip of the hoofs is there: it is one end of the canal du midi. You can visit the cellars of Noilly Prat.
Sète
We can end up with this “little Venice”, village of Georges Brassens. Do not miss its typical market, the Corniche which overlooks the sea, Mont St Clair from where the view is magnificent.
Marseillan
We have tested for you the special oysters from Tarbouriech in Marseillan and their mussels brasucade with local wines. This place is magical. The meal by the Thau lagoon with the sunset is a rare moment. It is open all year round, except in January. With our beautiful sunny winter days, we can enjoy it at noon, even on the terrace. The Thau lake is therefore only a small part of the sites to discover in the Hérault.
Back to the cottages “A l’ombre d’un olivier” “In the shade of an olive tree”
For a well-deserved rest in your comfortable cottage or by the pool. Then admire the view of the castle of Montlaur and the vineyards, listening to the song of the cicadas.
